Tech Tip: Fairy Lights Backdrop
Twinkle lights make a gorgeous backdrop for portraits and even as a subject in their own right, especially at Christmas time! You’ll need fairy lights, Check out our Christmas Fairy Light tutorial.
There are times when it’s not only ok to centre your subject, but actually more visually appealing. But it needs to be purposeful. This tutorial will help you decide when to follow the rules and when to break them.
Hang some small fairy lights in front of your lens to achieve this gorgeous effect. To attach them, use elastic bands to secure a chopstick or pencil on each side of your lens barrel, so that they protrude past the edge of the lens, and hang the lights on them. Ensure they’re not too close to your glass to avoid potentially scratching the glass, and blowing out the highlights.
Tech Tip: Natural Light Portraits
Look for natural light near a window or doorway for clean, bright light to create catchlights in your subject’s eyes. Place your subject at a 45 to 90 degree angle to the light source to create gentle shadows on the other side.
