If I could go back to younger Lou, when I was first starting out in photography, there are so many things I wish I could tell her!
Like many of you, I struggled with self-doubt and comparison. I questioned everything I did, and I held myself back from so many opportunities that I know would’ve brought me joy and helped me achieve my photography goals much sooner.
If you’re reading this, you might be feeling some of the same things. Perhaps you’re lacking confidence, unsure of how to take your photography to the next level, or even hesitating to put your work out there. I get it. I’ve been there. And while I can’t go back and change things, I can share my mistakes and what I’ve learned, in hopes of helping you avoid the same struggles and move toward your goals faster.
So here are the three things I would tell my younger photographer self if I could go back in time:
I used to think that I had to feel confident before I could take my camera out into the world. I was so scared of judgment.
The idea of taking photos in public, asking friends to model for me, or even participating in workshops or photography challenges felt overwhelming.
I would tell myself, “When I feel more confident, I’ll take the shot,” or “When I feel ready, I’ll sign up for that class.”
But here’s what I learned: Confidence comes from doing, not from waiting for it to magically appear.
The more I picked up my camera, the more I played around, the more I failed and tried again, the more my confidence grew. It wasn’t about waiting for a perfect moment—it was about jumping in and learning as I went. And it wasn’t just in photography. Recently, I’ve started doing triathlons.
Let me tell you—I’m not fast, and it’s a bit scary, but if I waited to feel fully confident, I never would’ve done it. The same goes for photography. Sometimes, you just need to start—before you feel ready. It’s through doing that you’ll find your rhythm and grow.
As a mum of three, I used to feel guilty about spending money on myself—especially when it came to my photography. I’d spend on my kids’ lessons, their extracurricular activities, and their gear without hesitation, but when it came to my own growth as a photographer, I’d hesitate.
Over time, I learned that investing in myself isn’t selfish—it’s necessary for my growth.
Photography is more than just a technical skill—it’s a creative outlet, an opportunity to connect with others, and a way to build a community of like-minded people. Investing in courses, workshops, and the resources to help me improve wasn’t just about photography; it was about taking time for me and ensuring I was continuing to grow—not just as a photographer, but as a person.
So, if you’re ever hesitant to invest in your photography journey, remember this: the return on that investment goes way beyond skills—it can provide you with fulfillment, creativity, and a supportive community.
One of the biggest mistakes I made early on was believing that better gear would make me a better photographer. I thought if I just had the latest camera or a fancy lens, my photos would improve. But here’s the truth: The gear doesn’t make the photographer—you do.
I spent too much time looking at other people’s equipment and feeling inadequate.
But what really makes the difference is learning to see like a photographer, mastering the use of light, and understanding how to bring your images to life through editing. Gear is important, but it’s secondary to the skill you bring to your photography.
So before you upgrade your camera or lens, I encourage you to focus on developing your skills first.
Get to know your current gear, learn what it’s capable of, and explore the creative possibilities with it. When you understand your limitations and strengths, you’ll be able to decide what gear you truly need to take your photography further.
I can’t go back and change my path, but what I can do is share these lessons with you.
