When I first started out as a beginner in photography, it was a huge challenge to learn the skills I needed just to get my camera out of auto!

Going out and doing a course in person somewhere wasn’t an option for me… I was a full time mother married to a self employed man who worked 80 hours over 6 days! My only option was learning online, by which I mean googling for articles and buying the odd e-book. But in doing that I was mostly trying to digest huge chunks of information that were written by science-y guys (that’s a real word) with the assumption I was a science-y girl who understood all the jargon. Even if you are science-minded… for me it took the fun out of a creative pursuit.

Precious Time

What’s more, I worked at a snail’s pace because I wasn’t just a girl with a camera. I was a girl with a camera, two children, a husband, three pets, a house, and a part time job! 

The Blind Leading the Blind

When my friends saw my photos online, they would exclaim “wow!”, “amazing shot!”, and the most common compliment “you should be a photographer!”. 

At first it was really flattering, but as my ability to see developed, I knew my photos weren’t that amazing. The problem with getting feedback only from friends who don’t have the skills to judge accurately, is that compliments alone don’t teach you and challenge you like honest constructive criticism, and that needs to come from those who know what to look for.

Learn with friends

None of my real life friends were into photography, so I had no one to ask questions of, get honest feedback from, or even go out and shoot with. Then one day, I discovered an online community of women in photography, with lessons for beginners suited perfectly to me!

The lessons were fantastic in helping me with the basics, but the community itself was so much more than that. If I didn’t understand a concept, I didn’t have to open a new tab and google, and once again try to digest chunks of technical jargon (cue opening yet another tab, to google definitions!). I could just ask one of the group and there was always someone with more knowledge than me to respond. Conversely, there was also always some with less knowledge than me, to learn from me too, which is very gratifying and confidence boosting.
