Are you the memory keeper in your family?
Let’s talk about something we all know too well – that feeling of frustration when we look at the photos we’ve taken. You know the drill… you snap away, trying to capture those beautiful family moments, but when you scroll through your images, something’s missing. They’re good… but they’re not WOW!
It’s like we’re caught in a never-ending cycle of “click and hope”. But guess what? You’re not alone in this, not by a long shot.
Today I want to introduce you to Elizabeth – she was her family’s memory keeper, already proficient in manual mode but frustrated by a lack of consistency in her photos. She wanted to expand her skills, her creativity, her confidence… AND she also dreamed of becoming a professional photographer.
Elizabeth wants to tell you how the Advanced Photography Course turned it all around for her…
I live in Connecticut in the USA with my husband and three girls, 7, 5, and 2. They are my muses and have given me infinite inspiration and joy. I am overly sentimental, so capturing my own family (and others) is a perfect creative outlet for me.
The internet algorithms got me good. I had my eye on the Advanced Photography Course for a couple of years, and each promo time, I was itching to sign up.
By fall of 2022 I was starting to feel more confident in my photography skills, but I kept getting frustrated with my limitations and lack of consistency. I didn’t know exactly why some photos seemed to be so great and others weren’t.
I had never taken a formal photography course before – a lot of my knowledge was through practice or tips I picked up from the internet.
I wanted to build my confidence in my understanding of light and how to get a good image in a variety of scenarios. Also, I got to a place where I really wanted to officially start a photography business, and I knew that I needed some professional guidance.
I had been eyeing the Advanced Course for ages. It was definitely something I did for myself – I had recently discovered my true passion for photography, and I wanted to dive in. I was on a break from teaching, and I felt this was the very best time to invest in myself.
Truly, I was giving myself and my family a gift – I have since become our family’s historian in a way I had only dreamed of.
From a creative perspective, I loved seeing so many beautiful interpretations of the same lesson challenges. I also learned there is no ‘one size fits all’ with art.
Overall, the course was incredibly inspiring and motivating, and it gave me the insight and skills to have confidence in myself.
I am a lifelong learner, and I just love discovering new techniques to try.
The instructors are SO helpful!
They answer so many questions in detail and in a supportive way.
The community of learners is also wonderfully supportive. It’s been a lot of fun to see the development of fellow students since the course too, in the Grads Group.
Money was the main factor that held me back in the past, but I wish I had budgeted for the course years ago. I easily could have cut back on a few non-essentials to make room for this in my life.
Since taking the Advanced Course, I have successfully begun my photography business! It was slow to start, but I focused on my skills more than anything else. I think that when potential clients see my work, they can tell how much love and dedication I put into it.
So just go for it, everyone starts somewhere! We all come from different backgrounds, different skill levels, and different motivators. It’s incredible to come together, have faith in the process, and see what comes of it.
I’ve also come to realize that my art is whatever I want it to be. At the beginning of my journey, all the beautiful photos on social media made me feel so much pressure to have props, a beautiful studio set-up, or to do things exactly like everyone else.
Now, I know what I love – the realness of life. I get such a rush from documenting my life at home – and the lives of others in their homes or in places they love. Sure, I’ll set up my backdrop from time to time and have fun with studio-style photography, but my heart is in the home. The raw, vulnerable, and beautiful moments captured in the space of most comfort are just brilliant to me.
This gorgeous before and after set of images from Elizabeth revel her amazing growth since taking the Advanced Course.
Much gratitude to Elizabeth for sharing your story with us and your beautiful photos! If you want to see more of her work you can find her here.
