One of the biggest learning points in our Online Courses is about Purposeful Composition!
With a little thought about how you frame your shots, you can take your images from snapshot – to – fabulous quite simply! A beautifully composed photograph can stand alone even when the other elements (eg. light, exposure, focus) are imperfect… but the same can never be said for a beautifully lit photograph with poor composition.
So What Is Composition?
Put simply, it’s the way in which all the elements in a photo work together. Good composition will be balanced and harmonious, and as a result it will be pleasing to the eye. It will draw the eye in and keep it there, and the subject will be obvious to the viewer.
The biggest key to improving composition is the ability to “see” what’s in your frame…. and then there are three very easy things that you can start doing today which will improve your photos immediately.
Get Out Of The Middle!
An easy way to ensure a balanced and harmonious layout is to follow a little something called the rule of thirds. The rule of thirds breaks your image into 9 portions and provides four intersecting points. If you place your subject on one of the intersecting points your composition WILL be strong, it’s that simple.
Fill the Frame!
Get in close, super close… and leave no doubt as to what your subject is. Fill two thirds of your frame with your subject so there are no competing elements and we know exactly what the subject is! These shots are fun for pretty details, such as the wispy lashes of your sleeping newborn, flowers in your garden, or those beautiful cupcakes you just baked!
Remove Distractions
Speaking of competing for attention… let’s talk about clutter! Look for distractions in the background and either move them, change your perspective, or move your subject so that you have a simple, plain background that makes them stand out! Snapshot to a great photo – easiest thing you can do!
