1. Clients Want to Know YOU
Think about it—when someone is looking for a photographer, they’re not just looking for great photos. They’re looking for someone they feel a connection with, someone they trust to capture their special moments. By showing up online, whether through Instagram, Facebook, or your website, you’re giving potential clients a chance to get to know you. They’ll get a sense of your personality, your style, and what it might feel like to work with you. And believe it or not, that makes a huge difference when they’re deciding who to hire.
For photographers, your clients are trusting you to capture their most important memories. When they can see your face, hear your voice, and understand your approach, it builds that all-important trust. So, showing up online isn’t just about self-promotion—it’s about helping clients feel confident that you’re the right person for the job.
2. You Already Have the Skills to Make It Happen
Now, if the thought of being in front of the camera makes you cringe, here’s a little secret: you already have the skills you need to show up online. As a photographer, you’re used to guiding your clients through a shoot, making them feel comfortable, and setting the tone for the session. Guess what? That’s exactly what you’re doing when you show up online!
You’re still setting the tone, only this time, it’s for your online presence. You’re leading the way, just like you do with your clients, but instead of behind the camera, you’re in front of it. Future clients want to know how much fun they’ll have working with you and how comfortable you’ll make them feel. The way you show up online is a preview of that experience. So, think of it as an extension of your work—an invitation for them to feel connected to you before they even book you!
3. Practice Makes It Easier (and More Fun!)
Here’s a tip that might help if you’re feeling stuck: pretend you’re talking to your best friend. Seriously, just imagine she’s on the other side of the screen. She’s not going to judge you or make you feel awkward, right? By imagining you’re chatting with someone you’re comfortable with, you can relax, and that natural, authentic vibe will shine through in your posts and videos.
And, just like with anything in photography, practice makes a big difference. The more you do it, the easier and more fun it becomes. Start small—share a behind-the-scenes shot from a session, talk about something that inspires you, or give a little glimpse into your life outside of photography. You don’t need to be perfect, just real. And remember, your followers want to see you. That’s what helps them feel connected and confident that you’re the right photographer for them.
