Marnie Martil took part in our Advanced Photography Course in 2016.
And since then her photography has continued to grow, helping her launch her photography business: Marnie M Photography.
Marnie photographs newborns, maternity, children and families and she is based in the northern Australian country town of Dalby in Queensland. We love Marnie’s work, and particularly loved watching her confidence grow to the point that she was able to pursue her dream.
We think she is an inspiration to women who love photography, and are trying to find the confidence to take it to the next level.
So, we had a chat with her…
Where did you begin?
I first got into photography when I was in high school. I just loved taking photos of my friends, with a very simple point and shoot camera. I loved photography and in my late 20s I bought my first DSLR, but I continued to shoot in auto, sometimes using the camera’s auto settings for portrait or action.
My photos where just ordinary and not very interesting.
I learned a little about my camera and sometimes I ventured to use the aperture priority mode, but I was never game enough to use it in full manual. But once I had my third child I wanted to capture his life with meaning, and learn how to use my camera properly. But I needed help.
We moved to a small country town and I met Carla Yeo.
She was doing the Click Love Grow Enthusiast Photography Course, and she tried to encourage me to undertake some study also.
But I always had an excuse.
Most of the time it was an issue with spare cash to pay for it, and that self doubt of “I’m not good enough”.
But after about 6 months, Carla said she was going to do the Click Love Grow Advanced Photography Course, and suggested we should do it together. Finally I thought “I need this for me”, and I did what I had to do to join the course.
I loved it and grew so much from it. I now only ever shoot in manual mode and I love the control I have… the ability to change a photo by changing settings.
Once you learn what Lou and Pam can teach you through this course you will never go back to shooting in auto again.
Your Photography Goals
My biggest goal has been to believe in myself and say “I am a professional Photographer”.
I learned so much from the Advanced Course which had the most amazing support network, that continues to support and encourage me.
I started to believe in myself and made the decision to put myself out there and start my business.
I want to build a child and family photography business out in my little country town.
The Advanced Course opened up my ability to see photography differently and how to capture it.
Photography is art and the ability to capture people who they are and where they are at in their lives.
If you take the time to know people you will see their story and hopefully capture that for them. The course gave me the tools to see how to create different moods, express feelings, and see the light. I now understand how light can convey emotion in a photo.
The other thing that I am forever grateful for is that it was a whole lot more than just learning photography.
It becomes a family of women who are there for you to encourage, guide, help, critique and continues to help you grow and be inspired long after the course finished. I really am forever grateful for them.”
Your Photography Style
My style of photography is natural light portrait photography.
I love close ups and light, and using the outdoors to give subjects the freedom to be themselves. I want to capture emotion, and produce something that families will love, and be able to laugh at when remembering their story.
Finding Inspiration
I find my inspiration from looking at the work of people I admire, studying to see where they may have positioned people in relation to the light, and their angles.
Bronwyn Pickering, another Click Love Grow graduate, continues to challenge me with her work, although we are nothing alike in our photographic style, as Bronwyn’s is lifestyle and mine is more posed. She challenges me to look outside the box and extend my thinking about light and composition.
I also love Kelly Brown’s newborn photography, and also Claire Pinder for newborn and family.
I also love Amy and Jordan Demos, and two other Click Love Grow graduates who inspire me are Louise Dobson and Mandy Jane Dalby.
But most of all my biggest inspiration are my children. I love to capture them and record what they were like at each stage of life.
What you shoot with?
I use a Canon 5d Mark II, but I’m hoping to be able to get the mark III one day.
My lenses are:
- Canon 24-70 f2.8,
- Canon 70-200 f2.8,
- Sigma 50mm f1.4 Art lens.
At the moment my favourite lens is my 70-200 as I can get back but still get my close ups with out being in their face.
I would love another prime but that is also on the wish list!
Lens cap in your undies?
One time during a session when my kids were distracting me and I lost my lens cap.
I got mad at my kids, but when I got home… I found it in my undies!
I couldn’t even feel it on my hip until I got undressed.
Before & After Click Love Grow
I totally love Marnie’s Before & After – showing just how beautifully her photos have progressed and allowed her to capture images of her daughter in the vision she has!
