Teaching women to do something that fills a space in their heart and brings them joy is incredibly fulfilling for myself and the CLG team. But sometimes (more often than we might realise) a student takes what we teach her and launches herself into the stratosphere, changing their life forever!
Naomi Sherman is one of those grads.
Since taking our Enthusiast Photography Course and then our Advanced Photography Course in 2014, she has become an inernational award winning food photographer, one of Australia’s best in fact (as voted by CLG!).
But that’s not all. As if she wasn’t busy enough working full time in the industry, she is literally days away from launching her very first cookbook, Edible Heirlooms.
A delicious showcase of Naomi’s beautiful images, and favourite recipes created and curated by the lady herself.
Read on to learn how Naomi went from using her DSLR in auto mode all the time (true story!) to internationally regarded food photographer and best selling (as predicted by CLG!) cookbook author…
Naomi:
In 2014, while suffering from a raging case of empty nest syndrome, I spotted an ad for Click Love Grow on Facebook. I’d always enjoyed taking photos when we traveled as a family, using my lovely expensive DSLR on full auto, of course. So I thought “Why not?” and clicked on the sign up tab.
Little did I know that my life was about to change completely.
I started out fully intending to become a famous landscape photographer, and that was my focus on the Enthusiast Course, as I learned to control my camera and the fundamentals of light and composition.
But during the Advanced Course as part of a lesson about backdrops, I baked some pretty fruit tarts and photographed them…. and that was it, I was a goner. I fell in love with food photography and soon I was indulging in my love of cooking solely to have something to photograph.
I started sharing all my images on Instagram and over time developed a following of foodies and food photographers and food bloggers alike.
Soon I was being commissioned for my food photography for bloggers and the like, and it just grew and grew and eventually morphed into a fully fledged food photography business, Naomi Sherman Food Creative.
Fast forward 5 years and I now work full time as a recipe developer and food photographer for a number of major international food blogs, with my images being viewed over 2 million times per month.
During that time I’m proud to say I placed in the top 10 of the 2018 Foodelia International Food Photography Awards, and was a finalist in the Food Portraiture Division of the 2019 Food Photographer of the Year Awards.
Aaand last but absolutely not least… I’m very excited to release my cookbook this week, Edible Heirlooms, which is a HUGE personal achievement for me!
Edible Heirlooms has its origins in a book that my sister gifted me for my 18th birthday. I was living in another state at the time, and desperately homesick, so the gift of hand written recipes from family members and friends touched my heart.
I still have that book, much battered and held together with rubber bands, but still in use. I decided to gather my own collection of recipes with stories from my family, my friends and foodies from around the world. Each recipe has a story… some are touching, some funny and some sad, but they all have special meaning to the contributor.
I’ve been working on this book for over two years now and am self-publishing, with an official launch date of 19th October.
“Edible Heirlooms is a book that belongs on the shelves of home cooks and professional chefs alike. Naomi’s talent knows no bounds. Her food photography tells a story that leaps right off the page and draws you in. I am a firm believer that you eat with your eyes first and Naomi’s creations leave my eyes seriously hungry! This book is a timeless classic and I couldn’t be more impressed.”

“I’ve admired Naomi’s work ever since I discovered this amazing lady on Instagram. I was so excited to be part of her book project! Edible Heirlooms is more than just a cookbook. It’s a true work of art. Naomi’s photos perfectly capture the essence the recipes and the stories behind their creation make this cookbook stand out from the crowd. Well done Naomi, you never stop amazing me and I can’t wait to see what you do next!”
Martina Slajerova, Author
“Naomi Sherman is a rare talent whose unique food photography and peerless styling vaults from the screen, transporting one to a state of comfort and grace. Like all master craftspeople, she makes her considered and skilled discipline of her metier look easy. As a self-styled culinary Aesthete, I was awed by the attention to detail in her compositions and wanted to skip down to the Huon Valley to taste them immediately!
In ’Edible Heirlooms’, her first book, Naomi shares her own trove of recipes with contributions from friends and family. This stunning sketch is a very personal and heartfelt expression of her nurturing journey thus far and I’m sure will be equally at home in your kitchen or your coffee table.”
